From a Tent to a New House!

When I was a very young girl living in Arkansas, my daddy started building us a house. I don't recall why we didn't have a place to live. It was winter and terribly cold during that time. My mama, daddy, 2 brothers, sister and I all lived in a tent and our kitchen and bathroom were outside. After a long cold time my daddy finished building our house and we moved in. We were so happy. I remember that at night my daddy would rock me in the rocking chair in front of the fireplace while mama got the bed warm for us. When the bed was warm enough daddy would say “mama, here comes your baby” and I would giggle. Sometimes we invited the preacher to our house for lunch after church. I remember one Sunday we had canned corn and I thought it was the best thing ever.

Some years later my grandpa gave each of his kids a piece of land in the Rio Grande Valley. Each piece of land had a small house on it. Sooo, we loaded all of our belongings into our pickup truck and headed to south Texas. My sister, Pat, and I rode inside with mama and daddy and my brothers, Jud and Jack, rode on a mattress that was piled on top of all of our belongings. We certainly looked like The Beverly Hillbillies. I remember stopping at a gas station and I got to get an Orange Crush soda pop. That was such a treat.

These are memories from days gone by. I've told you some of my memories ... now tell me some of your's.
